HISTORY
The Hidden History of the Garden Flat and Inverdruie House
On returning from World War II, Lt. Colonel J P Grant the younger of Rothiemurchus and his wife Lady Katherine Grant moved to Inverdruie House from The Boat House. Johnnie Grant of Rothiemurchus would be born at the house in 1946, and there the family lived until 1960 when they moved to Drumintoul Lodge. Johnnie remembers:
“The living room and kitchen of The Garden Flat was our kitchen and the room next to it was the larder. Milk from our 7 Ayrshire dairy cows at The Doune farm was collected daily – my mother skimmed the cream and made butter at least twice a week in the kitchen. My father’s office was inside the front door [of Inverdruie House] on the right; the dining room on the left.
There was background heating to keep off the frost provided by a ‘central heating’ boiler, fuelled by coal shovelled in by hand; it was still very cold. We were kept warm by layers of hand knitted wool jerseys and stockings, sawing logs, carting them in, big fires and lots of shivering.”
